Ducks

It was so beautiful this afternoon that Kris and I went for a walk around Nine Mile Prairie.  Besides seeing the resident Bluebirds, we saw some ducks flying overhead and followed them to the pond where they landed.  They were very far away, so the photos have been cropped a lot.  When I got home I was amazed at the variety of ducks we saw.

It's really hard to tell but in this photo there is a Northern Shoveler pair, Redhead, Gadwall, and even an American Wigeon (he's the one in the upper left-hand corner of the photo), he's not in focus but it's the first time I've seen one, so I had to include him!

Canvasback

On the way home from Nine Mile Prairie, we drove by Oak Lake and saw what looked like a Swan.  Since it was still nice out and I had the time, I went to the lake to see if I could get a photo.  I saw this guy and wasn't sure what he was until I got home and looked in my bird book.  He's a Common Merganser, the first time I've seen one of them.

Then I saw this smaller pair of ducks and again didn't know what they were until I got home.  They're Hooded Mergansers, also a first!

Canvasback couple, I think
